William F. (Fred) Roberson, CPA began business on May 1, 1989. Fred, the founder and member of the firm, brought a total of 29 years of accounting experience in private and public accounting. Fred received a Liberal Arts degree from Louisburg College and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from East Carolina University.
Fred began his accounting career in 1965 with the firm of Phillip W. Hutchings, Jr., CPA. He joined the army reserve in 1967 and upon completion of active duty left public accounting to become controller at a private business until 1971. The enjoyment of public accounting led Fred to join Ricca, Nelson, Gantt and Company. He became a partner in 1974 and stayed until 1980 when the firm merged with Touche Ross and Company. At this time, Fred and Andy Curl formed Roberson and Curl CPAs. The firm experienced rapid growth and both Fred and Andy desired to divide the firm and operate smaller practices. The firm divided on May 1, 1989, and Fred's firm became William F. Roberson, CPA. On July 1, 1998, the firm changed its operating entity from a sole proprietorship to a professional limited liability company and the name became William F. Roberson CPA, PLLC. On July 1, 1999, Fred's son, James Edward Roberson (Ed) became a member (owner) of the firm. Five years later, on July 1, 2004, the firm purchased Linda Whitaker, CPA. Throughout his career, Fred has worked in Durham in relatively small accounting practices offering quality, timely and personal service.
A proud Durham native, Fred still lives here with his wife, Connie. He has the joy of working with both his wife, the firm administrator, and his son and partner, Ed. His daughter, Kristen is a high school Spanish teacher in Winston-Salem.
Fred has been involved in the Durham community as long as he can remember. Some of the past organizations and duties he has had were with: Trinity United Methodist Church as the Assistant treasurer, on the Staff Parish Committee, and Chair of the Administrative Board, where he served for three years and currently as a Trustee. He has been a member of the Friendly North State Sertoma Club since 1969 and has served in all offices and is President for the current year. Fred has been on the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors and has served as President for the Croasdaile Country Club. Fred has also served on the Board of Directors for the Durham Sports Club. His current community involvement includes being a member of the Board of Trustees of Louisburg College since 1995, having served 5 years as the Chair of the Board of Trustees and currently chairs the Learning Partners Committee. Fred also serves on the Board of Directors for the Duke Blue Devils Club with his son.
He has held offices in the past with the North Carolina CPA Foundation as a board member and President for two years. He is currently a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Triangle Chapter.
Fred was named Sertoman of the Year in 1971, 1976, and 1991. He was named Alumni of the year for 2005 - 2006 at Louisburg College.
When Fred has a free moment, he enjoys walking on the beach and looking for shells. He has played golf since he was 10 years old and is proud of his 2 to 4 handicap status for the past 40 years. He is addicted to college basketball, especially as a fan of the Duke Blue Devils. Fred played recreational basketball until age 63.
When asked about his career, he said, "My entire public accounting career has been with small local firms. Working with small businesses has been and continues to be, a very enjoyable and satisfying experience. Not only does helping people with business, management, tax and estate planning make my time more worthwhile, but some of these people have become great friends. The relationships developed in a practice like ours is much more important than the work we do."
